It turns out that nutrition is vitally important for your developing child’s mental health as well as for the physical growth and development of your child.
Children who eat more nutritious diets perform better than those that don’t at all sorts of levels:
- they are physically stronger,
- they are mentally more agile, so learn better,
- they are less anxious, and
- they sleep better.
It seems to me those are excellent reasons to ensure that all kids are fed wholesome, nutritious diets!
What should such diets look like?
- Fresh fruits and vegetables should form the foundation
- Whole grains as a source of essential oils such as lipids and sterols, and also roughage
- Oily fish that area source of essential Omega 3 oils
- Other protein sources, such as beans and lean meats
- Very limited processed foods, fast foods, refined foods, sugary treats and drinks.
I’m sure that you are thinking that there are no real surprises here, and there aren’t. The question then remains as to why kids diets so often fall short of the essential needs. That’s a topic for a whole new discussion!
Unfortunately, one of the reasons that children are undernourished (and definitely not underfed!) is that healthy eating is a habit that has to be cultivated.
It requires Mom and Dad to lead by example! That means that old habits might have to be exchanged for new ones, and, as we all know, changing habits takes time and effort. That’s not to say it shouldn’t be done, and it is 100% worthwhile, as it benefit the whole family in a big way.
But it’s not necessary to compromise your child’s development and mental health in the meantime.
That’s where I am totally convinced that good, whole food supplements play a pivotal role. And I speak from personal experience. I was battling with my young sons who were always catching every bug that crossed their paths, and bringing them home.
