Keeping active women healthy

Apart from juggling all the domestic and work-related balls, many women are also focussed on living active, fit lives. Some do absolutely remarkable things – and fill me with awe!

As you can imagine, this doesn’t happen by accident. If living an active life is part of who you are, there are things that need to be kept in mind – so that you can keep doing what you love well into the future, without damaging your body.

You might think that this is all common sense – and I agree totally! However, what I am discovering is that common sense might not be as common as we expect! And when people become steeped in an activity (obsessed, even) they lose sight of the simple essentials.

What are the essentials for keeping active women healthy?

1. A well-rounded exercise regime.
Make sure that it includes cardiovascular work, strength training, flexibility. In short, well-rounded regular routines make sure that the likelihood of injury from the primary activity is reduced.
Proper warm-up and cooling down regimes are also essential to reduce the risks of injury.

2. Rest and recovery periods.
Your body is not a machine – so cannot be treated as one.
We all need times for rest and recovery (nightly, in fact!) and people who push their bodies often neglect to take breaks from strenuous workouts. Injuries are more likely, if not complete burnout.
This is over and above regular good sleep – which is also essential for health and wellness.

3. Balanced nutrition.
This is not a new concept!
Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats are what we should all be eating. And very important is adequate hydration.

But if you are putting your body under excess stress (physical) you almost certainly need more food of the right sort to support energy productions and then muscle recovery post exercise.

And remember, if your diet is one where there is a slow leak of certain nutrients, that will be accentuated with the additional physical stress that you are putting yourself under.

My personal experience is that it’s almost impossible to have what we might call a gap-free diet in this day and age. So I strongly advocate good whole-food supplements to fill any gaps that might be there without our knowledge. It’s like an insurance policy – rather than waiting to collapse and then picking up the pieces as best we can.

The choice of supplements is always important – but especially for people wanting to be competitive in their sport of choice. It’s all to easy to find yourself taking an illegal substance totally unwittingly.
