Mental Health Awareness
As we approach the end of the year and the ‘silly season’ it is a time to pay attention to mental health and well-being. The reality is that for most of us it’s an ongoing concern – and is important any time of the year. In addition, in recent times it has sneaked up on more people than ever before because of the unusual stresses and strains of our life situation.
We all know that we in South Africa live in a troubled society, in number one place globally for all sorts of undesirable societal issues such as rape, gender-based violence and so on. But currently support agencies have been receiving about 3 times as many distress calls as normal. People are struggling with depression and everything that goes along with that.
Some of the causes are beyond our control as we obey new rules and regulations, but there are other things that we should pay attention to in order to keep as well as we can.
Here are 6 areas to consider:
- Getting out into the sunshine. We are all beginning to understand the importance of Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin, for our health. And sunshine, brightness and warmth also gladden our hearts!
If you do not want to leave your Vitamin D status to chance I suggests supplementation. Please get back to me for recommendations. - We need to move regularly. Sitting for endless hours does not serve us. It’s actually called the new smoking in terms of how damaging it is to our health.
A useful tip in this regard is to choose something that you actually enjoy doing and find a buddy to do it with. Being held accountable by a friend is very helpful as it is not so easy to let yourself slip out of doing the activity just because you don’t feel like it!
Some ideas are walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, dancing, gardening and hiking. - We need enough sleep. It’s while we’re sleeping that our brains detoxify, process the emotions of the day, and fix new learnings into our circuitry.
If sleep does not come easily to you there are a few simple things to try: switch off all electronic devices about 3 hours before bedtime, keep your bedroom for rest and relaxation and nothing else, make sure the room is dark when you sleep, and certain supplements can help too – Omega 3 oils, Calcium and Magnesium in particular. - We need to take care of our environments, especially regarding the toxins that we unwittingly import into our homes. It’s said that homes are often the most toxic spaces because of the cleaning products that are used. And when we are locked down or working from home for long periods, just imagine the cumulative effects! If you’d like some advice here please get in touch.

I have sold these products for about 30 years now and am very happy with how they work, their cost-effectiveness and the fact that they are environmentally friendly, child- safe and non-toxic. - And what about exposure to emf from all our electronic devices!? I’ve already mentioned these before in relation to sleep. We really do need to monitor our exposure and make sure that each day we are out of doors and away from constant connection.
- We need actively take to care of our emotional well-being. Find something that works for you, such as meditation or prayer.
- Our nutrition is also a key factor. Organic, home-grown, unprocessed foods always serve us well. Unfortunately, at these times of stress many of us have fallen into the trap of comfort foods – high in sugars, bad fats, empty calories and so on. If eating well is too difficult, supplements can really help – and I personally use them on a daily basis!
