Omega 3 is Critical for a Healthy Heart

Eating fish is definitely good for the health of you heart. And two servings a week can reduce the risk of heart disease.
The caveat, however, is that it the fish you eat must be those that are rich in unsaturated fats. These are the fish that are rich in omega 3 oils and include salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring, tuna and some others. They are all dark fleshed fish – hake, for example doesn’t provide much by way of omega 3 oils.
What are these oils, and how do they support the health of your heart?
They are a family of essential unsaturated fatty acids responsible for many things, but of importance here, for combating inflammation.
Uncontrolled or chronic inflammation is damaging throughout the body, and it wreaks havoc with blood vessels, leading to heart disease, circulatory disease, thromboses and strokes.
So the benefits of omega 3 to the heart include the following:
- It decreases levels of triglycerides in the blood
- Blood pressure is slightly lowered
- Blood clot formation is reduced
- Irregular heartbeat can be normalised

In fact, the FDA and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) offer warnings about eating too much fish because of the dangers associated with the common contaminants – they specifically mention mercury. These are the people who they say should be cautious:
- Women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant
- Breast-feeding mothers
- Young children
If they need to be careful, why would you not feel that caution should apply to you and me as well?
