Surviving the Silly Season

Can you believe it that we are already in November? And with it comes the approach of the ‘silly season’ which some face with trepidation, and a few with equanimity.

So let’s take a look at some of the biggest challenges, and how we might alleviate the stress. At least a little bit.

1. Financial stress is a biggie.

There is immense pressure to keep up with the Joneses in terms of the gifts we buy for our children, family members and even friends. We might want to travel, and face the high fuel prices, sky-rocketing accommodation costs and the like. And the disappointment that follows should we realize that our travel plans are not actually financially feasible.

And we are all to aware of big expenses looming in January, especially if we have children still being educated. Setting a budget (and sticking to it) is a real stress reducer. And if the family is party to establishing the priorities each member is usually happy to work with it. It’s also then possible to manage expectations and reduce disappointment.

2. Time easily runs away from us.

So time management is essential. Last minute activities are big sources of stress. Creating a schedule to fit in all that needs to be done can be a great help. It’s also helpful to delegate and share the responsibilities. As more people contribute to the effort each person carries less of a load.

3. Family dynamics can be challenging!

Sometimes being in close proximity with some family members can lead to conflicts and stress!
The festive season is supposed to be a time of happy family reunions and celebrations, but unresolved tensions come along to the party too. Add to that too much food and drink and too much togetherness and there is a recipe for stress and outright conflict for sure. If you find a solution for challenges such as these please share them! And remember that some people deal with a deep sense of loneliness at this time. Maybe extend some friendship to such people in your life. It might turn out to be the most valuable gift that is given and received.

4. Overindulgence!

Our mental and physical well-being is challenged when we eat too much rich, festive food, indulge in too much alcohol, and take a break from our usual exercise routines. Stress is common, and for some it even leads to burnout.

If you want to stock up on some vitamins and minerals that support your during the ‘rough’ times here are a few to consider. Actually if you start using them before the festive season starts the benefit is enhanced!

Vit B complex: these vitamins are known as anti-stress aids, and they also help detoxify and reduce the symptoms on hangovers.

Magnesium helps to boost energy and metabolize the extra calories eaten.

Natural anti-inflammatories such as Flavonoids and Carotenoids, and Vitamins C and E. Inflammation is a direct result of stress – and chronic inflammation the underlying root of pretty well all chronic disease. We need to equip our bodies to manage it well.
