The 5 worst things you can do for your brain
Any idea of what the 5 worst things are that you can do for your brain?
The bad news is that it’s all to easy to slip into these habits. But the good news is that they are some of the easiest to turn around, once you recognise that they are lurking around you.
- Sitting too much
- Avoiding social interactions
- Not dealing with stress adequately
- Sleeping too littles
- Eating an inadequate diet.
- Lets delve a little deeper into these…
- Sitting too much.
Too much sitting is said to be worse for our health than smoking – and we kow that’s not very good for us.
Here are some of the results:
– metabolic syndrome, diabetes and obesity
– back issues
– varicose veins
– weakened bones (osteoporosis)
– increased risk of cancer
– increased anxiety
– cognitive decline and eventually dementia - Avoiding social interactions.
Positive social interactions play a very important role in our overall good health>
– Our immunity is more robust.
– Cardiovascular health is improved.
– Stress reduces.
– We stay more youthful.
– Depression and anxiety are alleviated and overall mental health improves. - Not dealing with stress adequately.
Unmanaged stress affects all areas of our health and well-being:
– Emotional health such as overwhelm, avoiding others, an over active mind, low self- esteem, moodiness, agitation and frustration.
– Physical health becomes impaired, for example: low energy, headaches, upset stomach, chest pains, muscle aches and pains, frequent infections, insomnia and more.
– Cognitive health declines with accompanying racing thoughts, disorganisation and forgetfulness, poor judgement, inability to focus on anything and a negative world
– Behavioural health alterations include procrastination, avoidance of responsibilities, over- or under-eating, developing nervous tics and turning to mood altering habits such as smoking, drinking or using recreational drugsAll of these lead to many health problems such as cardiovascular disease, severe mental health issues, obesity and other eating disorders, gastrointestinal problems, poor condition of skin and hair and more.
- Sleeping too little.
In the short term lack of sleep can lead to the following for example: loss of alertness, memory lapses, moodiness, unwillingness to participate in normal activities including exercise.
If the situation persists the effect are more severe: serious cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity, impaired immunity, depression and loss of libido.
And if that’s not bad enough, it also affects your appearance – wrinkling, dark circles under the eyes and more!!! That might be enough of a wake-up call in itself! - Eating an inadequate diet.
I am not referring to starvation! What I am referring to is a diet rich in calories, but poor in the nutrients that your brain needs to be healthy and function properly. The story is not new: eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, eat more fish and eat whole grains. And, of course limit as much as possible refined and processed foods. Sugar is a real enemy of the brain. All of the things I have mentioned here are in fact lifestyle changes, and we know how difficult it can be to change habits. But there is a way to take some simple, easy-to-do steps that can have significant positive impact while in the process of making the changes that are slower to put in place. And you start to feel better, so it’s easier to do the more difficult things!
I am referring to taking some really excellent food-based nutritional supplements, that are actually quite difficult to get from even a reasonable diet. High on the list as a top quality Omega 3, the essential oils (lipids and sterols) that we should be getting from whole grains (but aren’t) and vitamins such a the Vitamin B complex.
Just a caution: all Omega 3 supplements are not made equal. Some work, and some don’t and some are probably frankly bad for you!
