What are growing pains?

Sometimes kids complain about aching or throbbing thighs, calves or behind the knees.  The pain is usually present in both legs. Usually the pain is felt in the late afternoon or early evening, and it can be so severe that some kids might wake from sleep as a result. In addition, sometimes the affected children also complain of abdominal pain and headaches. This is what is commonly know as growing pains.

Actually, there is no evidence that growth is a painful process! So in some children the symptoms might be due to a lower pain threshold than normal, and in others there might be a psychological factor at play.

The causes are essentially unknown. The condition seems to be associated with periods of rapid growth, but the most likely factor is overuse during the day. Playing too hard (running, jumping, climbing) might be the culprit, as it takes a toll on a developing musculo-skeletal system.

What to do to help your child?

The pains usually stop after a while, so it’s a case of self-care measures to ease the distress until the time passes. This includes the following:

  • Massaging your child’s legs.
  • A warm bath before bed (and perhaps a heating pad until your child is asleep).
  • Stretching exercises.
  • A diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, and a minimal amount of processed foods.

But be aware! There might be times when it’s a good idea to visit your doctor.

Here are some reasons:

  • The pain is persistent and extends into the morning.
  • Your child no longer wants to participate in usual activities,
  • The joints become involved.
  • Pain is associated with a recognised injury.
  • There are other symptoms as well: redness, swelling, fever, rash, appetite loss, weakness or fatigue.
