Where there is no vision the people perish (Proverbs 29:18)

This is a profound statement, but it speaks of something philosophical, rather than about the function of our eyes.

Without sight we certainly do not perish, but our lives do lose a whole lot of the colour and texture that makes living pleasurable. And life also becomes much more difficult to negotiate.

The good news is that there are things that we can do to protect our eyesight and keep seeing brightly as we grow older.

As it turns out, what you eat has a big impact on what you see!

So the recommendations would be lots of yellow and orange fruits and vegetables, leafy greens, egg yolks, nuts and fatty fish from cold oceans. Does this sound at all familiar? Remember what your grandma or mother used to say about eating your carrots and your pilchards!

Why are these foods especially important?

It turns out that these foods are a good supply of certain vitamins and minerals are especially needed for healthy eyes: Vitamins C, E and A and Zinc in particular. But they also are a source of two phytonutrients which are also essential, namely lutein and zeaxanthin.

All of these nutrients protect the retina, macula and other parts of the eye because they are potent antioxidants. They improve the concentration of pigment in the macula which can then absorb excess blue and UV light before it damages the eye. And they also fight free radicals.

The fatty fish are recommended because they are your best source of Omega 3 fatty acids. An important one of these fats is called DHA (docosahexanoic acid) which is a component of retinal photoreceptors – the molecules responsible to detecting light to send to the brain for interpretation as sight. They fatty acids are also essential for keeping inflammation in check.

Sounds easy, doesn’t it?

But not really. I know for certain that I almost always fall short of the basic recommendations of a fish meal at least twice a week and 9-15 servings of the ‘correct’ fruits and vegetables. And it’s not very likely to change, as I feel I’m doing just about as well as I can, given the other pulls on my time and attention.

So I have made the decision that supplements just have to be part of my daily regime.  And I have found the ones I believe are worth taking – they tick the following boxes: they come from the normal human food chain, they are backed by peer-reviewed science and they have stood the test of time.
