Why is Omega 3 important?
We learned the value of Omega 3 in the diet from the Inuit people!
Scientists noticed that there was very little heart disease in the Inuit population even although they ate a diet that we would consider to be really unhealthy! For example, almost no fresh fruits and vegetables and other important foods. But they did eat a lot of fatty fish and that was their saving grace. The omega 3 oils in these fish protected them from heart disease!
On the other hand, we who eat the modern Western diet are at high risk of heart disease – it is still the biggest cause of unnatural deaths. And our diet is very is seriously lacking in the all-important Omega 3 oils.
We now know that every cell in every tissue and every organ requires Omega 3 to function properly. If we are short of it everything starts to get tired and sluggish and we become ill.
We also know that most people do not get enough of the good sources of Omega 3 from their diets. For example, how often do you eat fresh salmon or other fish of that sort? I know for sure that I don’t eat it often enough to supply me needs.
So what’s an obvious solution? For me it’s a no-brainer to take a supplement to ensure that I am never running on empty. It’s equivalent to have your car be low on end – it’s not a pretty picture.
What would the benefits of supplementing be? Here are a few:
- Healthy and flexible arteries and veins, reducing hardening of the arteries and other vascular diseases.
- A strong, healthy heart.
- The proper healthy ratios of fats in the blood: lower triglyceride levels, raised HDL levels (good cholesterol), lowered LDL levels (bad cholesterol).
- Reduced stickiness of platelets. Sticky platelets can lead to the formation of blood clots.
- Reduced inflammation in the joints, even alleviating the pain of osteo- and rheumatoid arthritis.
- A healthier brain! Some Omega 3 oils are essential building blocks of the brain! The brains of people who have high Omega 3 levels are slower to age, and cognitive function is maintained for far longer as we age. Evidence also shows that Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia are less likely to develop.
As with most things, there are products that work batter than others, and some that are frankly bad or us, even as they claim to provide essential nutrients.
