Homocysteine and Heart Disease

What is homocysteine, you may ask?

It is an amino acid that occurs normally in our blood. The problem only occurs when it starts to accumulate in too high concentrations.

So how does that happen?

Homocysteine is a breakdown product of methionine metabolism, and it, in turn, needs to be broken down further so that it can be eliminated safely. Several nutrients are essential for this breakdown to take place: Vitamins B6, B12, folate and riboflavin and the mineral zinc. If they are not available then the breakdown cannot take place and homocysteine accumulates.

Why does that matter?

It turns out that elevated homocysteine levels are a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, renal disease and degeneration of the nervous system – just for starters. The exact reasons are not yet clear but why wait to find out when you can reduce risk of hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and blood clots?

The good news is that it has been proven that supplementation with B vitamins and zinc can lower blood homocysteine levels.
